Substitute lesson plans are an unwanted necessity for teachers. Every year I put it off until the emergency rears it's ugly head because who has time for that, right?!?!?!? Well this year I dug deep down inside and decided to come up with a lesson that we can get ready and have on hand for when the dreaded emergency arises. If the emergency never arises, I suggest you take a mental health day, (ok say take one even if you have an emergency).

So what's more fun and engaging than a book about monsters? How about a substitute teacher teaching about a substitute teacher monster! You could leave the anchor chart below with the book and even a link to my descriptive video. For social studies the substitute can use the book to set classroom expectations for how to behave when substitute teachers are in the classroom. The substitute can work with the class to find key details and locate the lesson. When the lesson is over students work independently on retelling the story and explaining the lesson in writing. For writing students can write a narrative piece about what they would do if they were changed into a monster. We have a lot going on this week and not a moment to waste! It's pretty amazing that the kids are self sufficient enough to work on projects in small groups together. We will continue learning about influential African Americans this week through a shared reading project. If you missed it last week, our independent workstations focused on Bessie Coleman and Mary Bethune Cookman. Each day I will model the day's objective using a mentor text about Rosa Parks. After my short model, students are broken up into groups and assigned to a text about an influential African American. Each day they will work through the book gaining new information, using reading strategies previously learned in order to put together a poster that they will share with the class on Friday. Any groups that finish early may present to the class on Thursday in order to save time. Our writing block will be used in order to edit last week's task performance and we will use extra time for Valentine's read aloud every day. Key Details - ELA Lesson Plans #11

The next two week's of lessons are going to be two of the BEST WEEKS EVER! The students absolutely love learning about different countries and essentially getting to travel around the world. We will start the unit off during bellwork on the first day by making a suitcase to store our papers in. You can see an example of the suitcase in the picture below titled "Travel The World". Each day we will focus on a new standard and a new country in reading. Students have already encountered each of these standards and will lead their learning in small groups. Centers will be set up for them that include differentiated text, hands-on images of items from the country, flags, maps and a sight seeing guide. You'll see examples of these in pictures below. The unit that I made for these standards contains all print and go materials so there's not a ton of prep. There will be a written assessment each day in the form of a graphic organizer that students will store in their suitcases. Each day we will play a folk tale from the country that we get off of youtube for a read aloud. It's another great way to incorporate more standards while the students stay engaged. When time permits, students will get to make a craft during bell work from the country of the day.

During writing we will write an informational piece on our country of choice. Each student will be assigned a different topic to write about. The topic may include: food, art, music, practice, clothing and/or beliefs. We will use this writing during our culminating experience which is a Grade Level Culture Fair.
